Catalyst components for the (co)polymerisation of 1-alkenes (with each other of the ethylene) are made by intimate mixing of a halogenated Ti cpd., (I) an electron donor (II) a Mg halide-contg. carrier, and an (inter)halogen cpd. (III) in the presence of an inert solvent. The catalyst components give 1-alkene polymers with very low catalyst residues and high stereospecificity, so that catalyst residues and atactic material often need not be removed. Catalysts have high catalytic activity and give polymers with coarse granules and narrow particle size distribution. (I) is pref. TiCl4 or a cpd. TinXaAb in which X is halogen, A is the acid residue of a phenol, n >=1 and a and b are such that a/n and b/n = 1-3 and (a+b)/n = 3-4, esp. a Ti(IV) trichloridemonophenolate. The (II) is e.g. a 2-20C ether or an ester of a 1-9C acid or natural fatty acid and a 1-6C alcohol, esp. a 1-4C alkyl ester of benzoic acid, o- or p-toluene carboxylic acid, p-methoxybenzoic acid or phthalic acid. The Mg halide carrier used is pref. an oxide-free Mg halide, opt. mixed with an aluminium halide. The (III) is e.g. Br2, used e.g. at 0.01-1 mol. per mol. Ti.
|
