SIMULTANEOUS PREPARATION OF SUBSTITUTED BENZALDEHYDE AND BENZOIC ACID

PURPOSE:To obtain a large amount of the title compounds simultaneously, in high selectivity, with small-sized equipment, by oxidation of a substituted toluene in the liquid phase, in the presence of a Co catalyst, in a solvent of a substituted benzoic acid of the same series, preferably with the same substituent as the raw material. CONSTITUTION:A substituted toluene of formula I (X and Y are H, Cl, Br, 1- 12C alkyl, aryl, aryl nuclear-substituted with Cl or Br, 1-12C alkyloxy, aryloxy, aryloxy nuclear-substituted with Cl or Br, or cyclohexyloxy) is oxidized in the liquid phase with molecular oxygen, in the presence of a cobalt catalyst soluble in the substituted bezoic acid of formula III as a solvent, e.g. m-phenoxy benzoic acid, at a reaction temperature above the melting poit of the reaction composition, to give simultaneously a substituted benzaldehyde of formula II and a benzoic acid of formula III. USE:An intermediate for medicines or agricultural chemicals.
