The machine for driving underground galleries includes a shield. The revetment for the tunnel is introduced by concreting on site the step immediately behind the shield. The shield consists of a fixed rear port, and a mobile part made up of a set of plates (7a, 7b). The roof of the tunnel is made up from a number of arched shell elements (16) placed in conjunction with shell rings (15, 15a, 15b). A multiple component tamper (20) is used to move material backwards away from the tunnel face and is actuated by hydraulic presses. The machine is intended for driving galleries through unstable mountain structures where the entry is loose material is likely to delay the progress of tunnel construction. The tunnel wall can be erected over the main face equipment.
