High strength aggregate - obtd. by pelletising and baking clay-silicate raw materials, used for road-making, normal concrete, or lightweight concrete

Clay-silicate raw materials are highly compacted to make pellets or briquettes which are subjected to a brief baking process is which the pellets are exposed to mechanical stresses due to thermal shock. The raw materials pref. consist of clay or loam used to make dense or porous aggregates. The clay etc. is pref. compacted in a press using ca. 7 t/m2, so the pellets have a high green strength and do not crumble during rapid baking in furances with a short length. Baking pref. results in either a sintered aggregate, or grains with a molten skin on their surface; in either case, baking produces material with a desired bulk density, abrasion resistance and water-absorption.
