PURPOSE:To make an engine structure compact and light and to enhance its durability, by employing an arrangement in which opening and closing of an intake and an exhaust valves of a reciprocating engine is effected automatically in association with the movement of piston. CONSTITUTION:Piston 1 is fitted in cylinder 2 in freely slidable manner. At the bottom of cylinder 2, there are formed an intake port 3 and an exhaust port 4. In the intake port 3, there are provided a valve 12 moved downward by spring 9 and a valve rod 11 which urges valve 12 upward by means of spring 10 for closing intake port 3. When the piston 1 comes near to the bottom dead point, valve rod 11 is moved downward for opening the intake port 3. On the other hand, exhaust valve 21 for opening and closing exhaust port 4 is connected to a cylindrical member 16, and stopper pawl 16a at the top of cylindrical member 16 is fitted in cam groove 20 formed in the side portion of piston 1. Therefore, exhaust port 4 is opened when piston 1 comes near to the top dead point and closed when piston 1 comes near to the bottom dead point. |
