Cleaning appts. esp. for engine blocks has a pre-wash station and two main washing stations at which the components to be cleaned are washed with high pressure water at a pressure above 1,000 p.s.i. and pref. about 5,000 p.s.i. The components are dried in an air-knife drying station using a high volume of air at low pressure. A conveyor provides stepwise advance of the components between the stations. The dirty water from the washing stations can be recycled. Reciprocable manifolds carry jets at each cleaning or drying station. Fixed jets are also used.
