derivs. of formula (I) and their acid salts are new. In (I), R1 = H or 1-4C hydroxyalkyl, the imidazolinyl-2-amino gp. is joined to posn 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 of the isoquinoline ring and R2, R3 independently = H, halo, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C alkoxy-1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkylthio or di(1-4C alkyl)amino. (I) are antihypertensives free of sedative side-effects which have low toxicity (oral LD50 in mice is greater than 150-200 mg/kg). They may be administered orally (4-200 mg daily for adults) or parenterally.
