At least one of the electrodes for the high frequency welding of webs has parts which roll along the plane of the web e.g. consisting of woven fabric. The high frequency welding is effected by two electrodes arranged on both sides of the extended workpiece, and esp. by a welding arrangement which can be moved along the table supporting webs. The electrode may be replaced by a pair of heating rails or similar which are supported so that they can be guided against each other under pressure, and are positioned on both sides of and parallel to the line of m otion of the webs. Apparatus provides a high frequency weld capable of universal application for the processing of plastic films and insulating webs, at a higher speed with an improved quality of welding seams both straight and curved.
