1322159 Acetone-dicarboxylic acid esters LONZA Ltd 13 Sept 1971 [15 Sept 1970] 42630/71 Heading C2C Acetone-dicarboxylic acid esters are prepared by reacting phosgene at - 10‹ to +20‹ C. with a stoichiometric excess of ketene, preferably 3 to 5 moles ketene per mole of COCl 2 , in a liquid reaction vehicle which is an organic ester and/or ether and/or non-halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon and which has a dielectric constant of 2 to 8 measured at 25‹ C., and, without isolating the resultant acetone-dicarboxylic acid chloride, reacting it with an alcohol to produce the ester. The ketene used is preferably that obtained by depolymerization of diketene and preferred reaction vehicles are ethyl acetate and dioxane. The esterification step is preferably carried out under reflux and the ester may be isolated by vacuum distillation of the concentrated reaction mixture. The example describes the preparation of the diethyl ester of acetone-dicarboxylic acid. |
