The fork lift truck (1) has a counterbalance weight (6) which extends over the width of the track and is attached to two arms (13) mounted on pivots (8) on the sides of the chassis (9). The weight can be swung on the arms by a jack (16) mounted beneath the chassis. The position of the weight can be selected to suit the weight of the load carried on the fork lift. The cross-section of the balance weight is trapezoidal but with one curved side to match the contour of the rear end of the truck.
