The reductive alkylation of a nitroaniline with a ketone in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst to prepare an N, N'-dialkylphenylenediamine useful as an antioxidant or inhibitor sweetening agent in petroleum products has hitherto been performed in excess ketone as solvent because of the difficulty of dissolving nitroanilines in many solvents. However this has disadvantages and the present invention seeks to overcome those disadvantages. According to the invention the reaction is carried out in the presence of an ether solvent selected from monoethers of dihydric alcohols, diethers of dihydric alcohols and cyclic diethers. This allows the amount of ketone to be reduced to slightly above the stoichiometric amount without deleterious effects.
|
