Organic materials such as straw, fruit skins and vegetable remnants generally, rubbish, wood, coal, etc. are fed into a shaft-like box, through which they slide along grids as they are heated from below in a process for low temperature carbonisation or gasification. During sliding down, the materials are heated slowly to the required temp. and they are drawn out below as ashes whilst the gas produced leaves the plant at the top. Used to make possible the arbitrary adjustment of each pressure-time-temp. characteristic favourable to the carbonising process, by keeping the movement of the material and the transfer of heat by the stream of gas completely separate from each other. As distinct from swirling layer furnaces, the movement of the material is determined only by the grids which by their inclination, length, difference in height determine the thickness of the layer of material and the manner in which it flows.
|
