Tubular heat exchanger - has multiple helical coils wound around central tube inside cylindrical housing

The heat exchanger is built up from multiple helical coils of tube (1) wound around a central support tube (3) and fitted inside a cylindrical housing (4). The small bore tube (1) is wound in helical coils one outside the other with all the coils having the same pitch. The tubes (1) are welded together at every second or third coil. One of the fluids of the heat exchanger flows through the tubes (1) whilst the other fluid flows along the helical path between each layer of coils (1). A very large heat transfer surface is thus provided in a relatively small volume.
