Materials such as malt and barley are softened before wet bruising. The process has a softening zone in which the grain is contacted with water. It is moved through the zone by means of a screw conveyor device. The softening zone is a water bath consisting of an inclined cylindrical vessel through which passes a screw conveyor. The conveyor serves to move the grain through the zone, the speed of the rotation determining the residence time. Used for softening malt and barley. Existing systems cause variation in the water content with grains sticking together, caused by non-uniform treatment. The new process ensures uniform residence time.
