A retracting rip aid for car wheels has a flat profile band on a pivot mounting alongside the wheel to swing into position around the wheel to improved grip. The band has grip surfaces on both sides and is retracted so as not to damage clear roads. The aid is operated from the dashboard controls. It can be shaped as a band around the tyre or as a set of grip pads whirled under the tyre by a servo driven mounting alongside the tyre.
