Control of water content of impermeable soils - involves drilling boreholes in foundation and filling them with free draining material

The fine grain soil is tested in the laboratory by the oedometer test and its shrinkage and swelling properties are measured by plotting the void content against the log of the applied pressure. Boreholes are drilled around but just outside the perimeter of the site to a depth and spacing determined by the laboratory test and filled with free draining material. A trench is dug connecting the tops of the boreholes and it is also filled with free draining material before being capped with a protective layer. The trench is inclined so that the water supply or removal can be from a single point.
