Automatic alignment of burner on seam during welding - where periodic reversal of transverse oscillation of burner is controlled by monitoring welding current

The process is used esp. in inert gas welding, where the burner is oscillated transversely across the seam. The alteration in the welding current (I) produced by the oscillation is continuously monitored and employed to reverse the direction of travel of the burner across the seam. In the pref. process, the welding current rises to a max. when the burner reaches the centreline of the seam and then starts to decrease. The direction of transverse travel of the burner is pref. reversed when a specific, adjustable time has elapsed after the burner has passed over the centreline of the seam. Very narrow welded seams can be produced.
