the device uses a light source (5), with a transparent protective cover plate (6), under the bottle, for illuminating the inspection zone, with a photodetector (7) receiving light from the latter to provide a rejection signal upon detection of irregularities. The output of the photodetector (7) also controls a cleaning device for the cover plate (6) for the lamp (5), so that the cover plate (6) is cleaned if a given number of reject signals are received within a specific period. Pref. the cleaning device (11) has a supply pipe directing cleaning fluid onto the cover plate (6), with a valve (14) controlled by the photodetector output, together with at least one wiper blade (13) and a motor operated rotating brush.
