Fire retardant for polyacrylonitrile (PAN) moulding compsns., esp. films and fibres, consists of flurotetrabromotoluenes (I), pref. in an amt. of 2-30 wt.% of the composn. (I) have good solubility in ordinary solvents, do not cause opacity or discoloration of the compsn. or impair its flexibility and give self-extinguishing compsns. which do not form burning drips in a fire.
