The engine has a piston reciprocating in a cylinder with a combustion space formed between the crown of the piston and the top of the cylinder. An auxiliary piston in the cylinder head varies the volume of an auxiliary space communicating with the main combustion chamber and thus varies the compression ratio. The auxiliary piston is moved by a hydraulic mechanism to increase the compression ratio during starting and until the engine has warmed up. The hydraulic oil is released from the actuator by a thermostatic mechanism responding to engine temp. The auxiliary piston mechanism is similar to that in 2845948.
