<p>Polyphosphazene polymers are prepared which contain repeating units of the formulas:

<Chemistry id="chema02" num="0002"><Image id="ia02" he="15" wi="46" file="IMGA0002.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>wherein R, and R<Sub>2</Sub> independently are substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic, aryl, araryl, alkylaryl or heterocyclic radicals or R, and R<Sub>2</Sub> can be linked to form a cyclic radical and R<Sub>3</Sub> is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or hydrogen, X' is chlorine, a substituted or unsubstituted alkoxa, aryloxy, amino or mercapto substituent group or mixtures thereof which are compatible with an N-substituted amino substituent; and 20 ≤ (w+y+z) ≤ 50,000 per polymer and (y+z) > 0.</p><p>The polymers may be prepared by reacting a poly(di- chlorphosphazene) of formula -(NPCl<Sub>2</Sub>)<Sub>n</Sub>- ; wherein n is from 20 to 50,000, with a cyclic ketal containing a hydroxy group in the presence of a tertiary amine, optionally followed by addition of an alkanol, phenol, amine, or mercaptan.</p><p>The polymers of the invention can be utilized in forming protective films and also in applications such as molding, coatings, foams and the like.</p> |
