Twodrive wheels, with electric motor drive, and two front corner sensors to effect swivelling movement on encountering obstacles, are incorporated in the machine for sucking dirt from the bottom of a swimming pool. Each sensor (90) isconnected to a driving wheel (64, 66) via a gear train. With a sensor activated by touching an obstacle, the direction of rotation of the wheel concerned is reversed for a set period thus checking forward movement of the machine. The sensors may be allotted to diagonally opposite wheels. This facilitates evenly distributed working over the pool bottom.
