Fittings for the ends of a reinforced plastic sheath for a flexible cable, i.e. for linking a rotary or reciprocating mechanism, are secured by mechanical engagement in recesses produced in the surface of the sheath by an ultrasonic heating tool. The tool is applied radially until stopped by the resistance of the metallic reinforcement with the sheath body. The example describes hot impression of a polyethylene cover which enclose a metallic mesh surrounding a sheath core tube of e.g. polyamide resin. The sheath bore may be supported internally while its outer surface is impressed by the ultrasonic probe. Melt drilling leaves the sheath relatively free of residual internal stress. |
