Cylinder head gasket for IC engine - has composite metal and elastic construction to seal both cylinder and cooling jacket

The engine has a cylinder (5) with a liner (1) in which a piston (2) reciprocates. The space (6) between the liner and the cylinder forms a cooling water jacket. A cylinder head (17) covers both the cylinder and the liner and is sealed to the cylinder by a gasket (7). The gasket has a composite structure with a central layer (8) of metal and two outer layers (9,10) of elastic material such as rubber or plastic. In plan it is circular with four internally projecting lugs (16) spaced equally round the circumference which abut on the liner. This enables a single gasket to seal both the cylinder and the water jacket.
