PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound useful as medicines, such as drugs for the liver or hematopoietics, in one step in high yield, by reacting glyoxylic acid with glycoluril in the presence of an alkali without using an acid. CONSTITUTION:One mole of glycoluril of formula I is reacted with 0.5-10mol, preferably 1-7mol, of glyoxylic acid of formula II in the presence of 1-20mol, preferably 2-15mol, of an alkali, preferably sodium hydroxide, at 70-110 deg.C, preferably 80-105 deg.C, to give the title compound of formula III. The glycoluril is readily obtained by reacting glyoxal with urea. |
