The device has a motor driven drum (10) around which the cable can be wound or unwound as the crane, or other moving load moves towards or away from the fixed connection at the other end of the cable. The drum is divided into compartments (22) so that it can not only accommodate electrical cables, paid out or rewound, but also a hose for a pneumatic or hydraulic supply. The drum side ends of the paid our or rewound cables are connected directly together, with the paid out cable (40) forming a loop (42). The cable is preferably a flat cable and is wound around a part of the drum that is smaller in diameter than the part around which the cable is rewound.
