A four-cornered billet 6 is first reduced to octagonal section in a stand 1 having four similar rolls 3 and 4 arranged with their axes in a common plane and each having a peripheral groove of V-shape whose side walls define an included angle of 135 degrees and is then fed to a planetary skew rolling mill to produce a rod of circular cross-section. Only the horizontal rolls 3 of the stand 1 are driven.
