Domestic water tap with spherical plug - has reduced pressure on sealing rings which are pressed against surface of sphere

The domestic water tap is constructed from a cylindrical body (20) with a transverse bore (1) to receive two screwed fittings (2, 3) forming inlets and outlets. These fittings have recesses for sealing rings (10) which are pressed against the surface of a sphere (4). The sphere has a transverse bore (5) which can be aligned with the inlet and outlet (2, 3) to allow through flow, or turned through 90 deg. to block off the flow. The sphere has a screw driver slot (30) to receive the end (31) of the spindle (15) which fits in a longitudinal bore in the body (20). This design of tap reduces the pressure on the sealing rings (10) with a consequent increase in service life.
