A liquid transfer or applicator device to be used, for example, as an applicator roller (1) for the application of paint or the laying-up of resins has a surface formed with a number of intersecting walls (3) of resiliently flexible impermeable material, such as natural or synthetic rubber, subdividing the surface into a number of identical open cells, each sufficiently small to retain a quantity of the liquid by surface tension.
