The loading mechanism is partic. intended for a refuse collecting vehicle (10) with a main space (11) for the refuse, a trough (16) into which the refuse is tipped, and a power-operated (21, 22, 24) shovel (20) which moves in successive steps controlled by individual switch pulses. An electronic safety and correction circuit is provided which responds to switching failure so that only a pre-determined sequence of switch pulses is possible and incorrectly switched shovel movements are prevented. Individual shovel movements may be initiated by limit switches or pressure-sensitive switches, whilst the electronic circuit contains electronic interlocks which permit the switch pulse for the next following movement only.
