Vinyl chloride prepn. - by chlorinating mixt. of ethane and ethylene with chlorine which is evenly distributed in the reaction zone

Vinyl chloride (I) is prepd. by chlorinating a mixt. of 5-50 vol. % ethane (II) and 50-95 vol. % ethylene (III) at elevated temp., the chloride being evenly distributed over the length of the reaction zone. The amt. of chlorine used in mol. is 3m +0.3 u where m is the mol number of (II) and u is the mol number of (III). The Cl2 is pref. fed in 4-6 different places esp. at the first place 5-10 vol. % Cl2, at the second place 10-15 vol. % Cl2, at the third place 15-25 vol. % Cl2 and at the fourth to the sixth places the rest of the Cl2 is fed into the reaction zone. (I) yield is increased to 70 wt. % and energy requirements are reduced.
