<p>1392701 Production of chlorinated phthalonitrile DIAMOND SHAMROCK CORP 16 Oct 1973 [17 Oct 1972] 48175/73 Heading C2C Chlorinated phthalontrile is produced by (a) introducing gaseous Cl 2 and a molten, atomized, phthalonitrile into a fluidized bed of activated carbon particles maintained at a temperature in the range of 300‹ to 400‹ C., at least the major part of the chlorine being separately introduced into the bottom of, and serving to fluidize, the bed and the phthalonitrile being introduced into the bed above the point of Cl 2 introduction; (b) reacting the Cl 2 and phthalonitrile therein to form the desired chlorinated phthalonitrile; (c) separating the resultant chlorinated phthalonitrile from the other reaction products; and (d) recovering solidified, particulate, chlorinated phthalonitrile.
