1,146,736. Testing exhaust gases. ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP. June 21, 1966 [June 22, 1965], No.27769/66. Heading F1B. A catalytic exhaust purifying device comprises a refractory element 15 supporting the catalyst and situated in a cylindrical casing 11 so as to be spaced therefrom by a space 30, the upstream end of which space is closed by a flange 34. The element 15 comprises a porous ceramic honeycomb-like structure formed of corrugated layers as described in Specification 882, 484, on which is deported an active metal oxide e.g. gamma alumina, and a catalytic metal. The casing 11 has frusto-conical inlet and outlet ends 12, 13, the ends of which are inturned at 34, 36, to close the gap 30. The outer layers of element 15 are sealed by a cement to provide an insulating layer 38. A wire mesh shock-absorbing device 31 is provided in the space 30. Air is mixed with the exhaust gases upstream of the device 15. In Fig. 8 (not shown) exhaust gases enter at both ends of a cylindrical casing (50a) which contains two catalytic elements (56), (57), the treated gases escaping through outlets (78), (79). |
