Process for the prodn. of the gaiacol ester of acetylsalicyclic acid (I) comprises heating equimolar quantities of gaiacol (II) and salicylic acid (III) at 90-100 degrees C and addn. of an excess of a chlorinating agent (pref. phosphorus oxychloride). Reaction is continued until evolution of gaseous HCl is complete, and then the mixt. is poured into water, neutralised with a base and acetylated by known methods to give (I). The process gives high yields of a very pure prod. and does not necessitate the use of solvents. Prod. is used in pharmaceuticals.
