In preparing higher alpha-olefin (co)polymers by (co)polymerisation of the starting monomers in the presence of a catalyst (I) comprising an organoaluminium cpd. and a Gp. IV transition metal cpd. (II) in a hydrocarbon medium and then separating the solvent and (I) residue, the (co)polymerisation is carried out in the presence of (I) additionally contg. a trialkyl vanadate cpd. and as (II), an alkoxy deriv. of Ti, Zr or Hf. The rate of polymerisation is improved and conversion raised. The polymers have high heat resistance, insulating properties, chemical resistance, stereoregularity, degree of crystallinity and are non-toxic. The polymers are used in (radio)electronics, medicine or cable insulation.
