Process for hydrolysing polymers contg. acetate groups comprises maintaining the polymer in intimate contact with an at least stoichiometrical amount of Ba (OH).8H2O (based on acetate groups), for at least 20 mins. at a temp. above 100 deg.C. The polymer is pref. a vinyl acetate polymer, or an acetylated butadiene polymer. The reaction temp. is pref. in the range 100-200 deg.C. The reaction is pref. carried out by grinding together the polymer and Ba (OH)28HY2O. The process enables polymers contg. acetate groups to be effectively hydrolysed. The formed Ba (OAc)2 can be tolerated as a filler in many cases. If necessary, this pdt. can be removed by washing with dil. HCl soln. at 80-90 deg.C. The degree of hydrolysis can be easily controlled, esp. when only slight hydrolysis is desired. |
