A diesel engine (1) has an inlet manifold (6) with branches (7-10) to individual cylinders (2-5). The exhausts (12-15) from the cylinders lead into a common manifold (11). There are connections (18-21) between the inlet branches (7-10) and the exhaust branches (12-15) arranged so that each connection runs between an inlet and an exhaust which are open at the same time. Each connection contains a regulating valve (22) operated from a common controller (23) in accordance with engine operating conditions. The valves are opened during idling and cold starting and closed at full load. For starting between 40% and 60% of the suction volume is provided by the recycled exhaust gas.
