Pawl drive for circular knitting machine control or programming drum has a pair of pawls driven in synchronism with the cylinder revolutions effecting a number of successive index steps. Drive has a number of cylinder phase selecting devices each of which has a set of selection positions and each set is associated with a particular cylinder phase, and >=1 set is provided for one tooth on the ratchet wheel for determination during which rotary phase of the cylinder this tooth is to be indexed. Drive includes further cylinder phase indicating devices which are associated with other devices to achieve a sequence of control positions each of which in turn is associated with a particular one of the succession of the phases. Indexing step control devices are provided for superposition of a number of indexing steps onto the wheel for effecting a continuous or intermittent drum feed. Control device is intended for the order to selection of positions and for the control of the indicating devices to permit indexing in the selected phase only. Reliable actuation of couplings for the cam discs in a knitting machine is achieved and clashing of e.g., sock knitting tools and their breakage is prevented.
