Benzoxazolyl-phenyl-stilbenes of the formula <IMAGE> in which X is a carboxylic acid group or an ester or amide thereof, a phenyl sulphonate group or a sulphonamide group, a cyano group or alkylsulphonyl and the ring A can be substituted by alkyl having 1 to 4 C atoms, phenyl, chlorine, alkoxy having 1 to 4 C atoms, phenoxy, cyano, alkylsulphonyl having 1 to 4 C atoms, phenylsulphonyl or alkoxycarbonyl having 2 to 6 C atoms, a process for their manufacture as well as their use for the optical brightening are disclosed.
