In an asynchronous MHD generator where the fluid moves faster than the energizing travelling magnetic field, the lateral shortcircuiting conductors forming the side walls of the duct comprise a plurality of individual electrically insulated component conductors, each conductor having its longitudinal direction parallel to the axis of the duct. To further reduce eddy current losses the component conductors are shaped such that they lie along at least part of the lines of magnetic flux. Various forms of conductor are shown including ones where the lengths of the individual component conductors, which may be of different thicknesses are substantially equal. It is also stated that the conductor may be bisected on the mid-plane of the duct and rejoined with the interposition of insulating material. The conductors may be produced by winding an insulated copper foil into rectangular shape and then dividing it to give the desired equal length component conductors thereby producing both lateral conductors in one operation. If foil of varying thickness is used, winding commences at the thickest part. |
