The safety barrier for a motorway is constructed from channel section uprights (1) with box-section horizontal beams (5). The box-section has a slot along one face to receive a double-sided hook (20). The hook (2) passes through a hole (10) in the web of the upright (1) and is retained by a lever (3) with a hooked end which engages a hole (21). The lever (3) pivots on a rib (12) welded inside the upright (1) and its other end is secured by a nut (42) and bolt (11) which passes through a hole in the channel web. This fixing is useful when access to the far side of the upright is restricted.
