Apparatus for mixing and compacting polymeric moulding powders comprises a vertical screw feeder 2 having a powder inlet 12 and discharging to a rotating and axially reciprocating screw mixer 1 having interrupted flights 5 cooperating with teeth 6. The lower end of the screw feeder is surrounded by a cylindrical filter sleeve 20 of porous elastic material retained in a housing 17 having a connection 19 to a source of vacuum or pressure; a bore 24 connects the housing 17 and the housing 3 of the mixer screw 4. The filler can be cleared of adherent powder by briefly applying pressure through the connection 19. An inert gas may be supplied to the mixer housing through the pipe 8 which can be separated from the bore 24 as by a restriction which promotes formation of a plug of material. |
