In order to dewater effluent sludge, a pipe (3) shaped into a spiral (1) is provided, the coils of which virtually lie together. The effluent is fed at the bottom end of the spiral and the dewatering is carried out along the spiral gap between the pipe coils, the settling residue (15) having a filter action. The spiral (1) can be compressed or expanded by hydraulic or mechanical means (4). The pipe can be heated by a medium flowing in counter-current to the effluent. This device performs a continuous dewatering process along a relatively long spiral gap. <IMAGE>
