The engine has a sump from which oil flows to a pump through a heat exchanger. The pump delivers oil to the engine through a thermostatic valve which can divert the oil through an after cooler served from the engine cooling water. The oil is preheated in the heat exchanger on the inlet to the pump by heat from the engine exhaust. The heat is transferred from the exhaust to the heat exchanger by a heat pipe. The heat pipe is positioned and arranged to limit the temp. which the oil can reach in order to avoid the risk of cracking or vapour formation.
