A cigarette making machine has a "master" motor (19; 70) driving at least one part (for example, the cut-off device 19) and a separate drive (24; 26; 28; or 73; 81; 89) for another part of the machine (for example, the garniture tape or filter attachment machine) which is synchronized with the "master" motor at least in regard to speed and possibly also in regard to phase. A similar use of separate but synchronized drives is applicable to a cigarette filter rod making machine.
