The invention comprises 1-acyl-2,2-dicarbalkoxy-4-propyl-5-hydroxypyrrolidines of formula <FORM:1107393/C2/1> wherein R is an alkyl group (1-6 C) and Ac is the acyl group of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid (2-12 C), specifically acetyl. The compounds are prepared by treating 2-propylacrolein with a dialkyl acylamidomalonate wherein the alkyl group is R and the acyl group Ac, in the presence of a base. 4-Propyl proline is prepared by reacting the 1-acyl-2,2-dicarbalkoxy-4 - propyl - 5 - hydroxypyrrolidine with tin and a mineral acid such as hydrochloric followed by treatment of the mineral acid salt with a base such as silver carbonate or oxide. |
