The peg is for anchoring an ice-axe or ropes in snow while climbing. It consists of a cylindrical peg (1) with a pointed end (2) and projecting rungs. Near the top of the peg is a fin (10) that moves freely and holes (9) in which an axe or rope can be fixed.
