In a clamping head for a materials testing machine, the specimen 3 is held between wedge members 2 which are moved into the gripping position by a toggle mechanism comprising a spindle 4 and stacks 6, 6' of angled steel laminations bearing against thrust plates 8, 8'. To move the wedges into the gripping position, the stacks of laminations are moved into the maximum thrust position bearing against thrust plates 8, 8', movement of the spindle 4 being limited by an adjustable screw 7. |
