A plant thinning apparatus comprises plant feelers 12, 13, 14 which close switches 19, 20, 21 to operate a motor 27 driving a wheel 33 provided with radiating spokes each carrying a thinning spade. As shown in Fig. 1 the motor 27 will only operate when each feeler contacts a plant and the wheel 33 destroys the middle plant. The wheel may be replaced by a spray device which kills the required plant by spraying it with a chemical. As shown in Fig. 5 an actuator unit 49 is provided for opening a solenoid valve 39 which actuates to spray nozzle 37 for chemical spraying to kill the required plant. The unit 49 will not operate until both feelers 50, 53 contact a plant when an arm of the unit moves to position 54. If the next contact with plants involves both feelers 53, 50 the arm moves to position 55 and the third plant 36 is sprayed. If only one feeler contacts a plant the arm will go back to position 51 and the cycle is then repeated. |
