In the field of spring assemblies for crawler type vehicles, the servicing and/ or replacement of recoil springs in the field is of ten difficult and dangerous since the springs require large preloads and the equipment required to service the springs is not readily conveyable to the field. The object of this invention is to provide a spring which can be serviced and/or installed in vehicles in the field. The spring assembly (20) for use in a crawler type track roller frame (12) includes an elongated tubular housing (28) having opposite open ends. A stop (36) at least partially closes one of the ends with a compression coil spring (30) being received within the housing and abutting the stop. A radially inwardly directed flange (48) on the other end of the housing has an inner diameter greater than the outer diameter of the spring for insertion of the spring (30) therethrough, but smaller than the outer diameter of a split retainer (60) (62) which supports an additional stop (52) for the spring (30). The two spaced stops (36) (52) sandwich the spring (30) therebetween and are axially movable to preload the spring (30). |
